पहली बार चीन में दिसंबर 2019 में सामने आया कोरोना वायरस  अभी तक 10 तरह के वायरसों में म्यूटेट हो चुका है (बदल चुका है)। विभिन्न भौगोलिक क्षेत्रों इनमें से एक ज्यादा प्रभावी है जिसने लगभग बाकी सभी प्रकारों को विस्थापित कर दिया है। यह दावा एक भारतीय संस्थान द्वारा किए गए वैश्विक अध्ययन में किया गया है। 

पश्चिम बंगाल के राष्ट्रीय बायोमेडिकल जीनॉमिक्स संस्थान के निधान बिस्वास और पार्थ मजूमदार ने किया है। यह अध्ययन जल्द ही इंडियन जर्नल ऑफ मेडिकल रिसर्च में प्रकाशित होगा। यह जर्नल भारतीय चिकित्सा अनुसंधान संस्थान (आईसीएमआर) की ओर से प्रकाशित किया जाने वाला प्रमुख जर्नल है।
