मुंबई : प्रवाशांसाठी एक वाईट बातमी आहे. Google कडून रेल्वे स्थानकांवर मिळणारी मोफत WiFi ची सेवा बंद करण्याचे संकेत गूगलकडून देण्यात आले आहेत. त्यामुळे भविष्यात ही सेवा आता मिळणार नाही, हेच स्पष्ट झाले आहे. गूगलने अनेक देशांमध्ये फ्री वाय-फाय सेवा दिली होती. भारतातही ही सेवा रेल्वे स्थानकांवर उपलब्ध करुन देण्यात आली होती. मुंबईत अनेक स्थानकांत ही सेवा सुरुही आहे. मात्र, गूगलच्या नव्या निर्णयामुळे ही सेवा आता बंद होणार आहे. त्यामुळे प्रवाशांना मोफत वाय-फायचा लाभ मिळणार नाही.

Google कडून रेल्वे स्थानकांवर WiFi ची मोफत सेवा पाच वर्षांपूर्वी सुरु करण्यात आली होती. ही सेवा आता मिळणार नाही. गूगलने मोफत वायफाय सेवा पुरवणारा Google Station हा प्रकल्प भारतासह अन्य देशांमध्येही बंद करत असल्याची घोषणा सोमवारी केली आहे. भारतासह नायजेरिया, थायलंड, फिलिपाइन्स, मेक्सिको, इंडोनेशिया, ब्राझील आणि दक्षिण आफ्रिका या देशांत गूगलकडून मोफत वाय-फाय सेवा पुरविण्यात येत होती. आता तेथील सेवाही बंद केली जाणार आहे.

गूगलने ही सेवा आपल्या उत्पादनाची ओळख वाढविण्यासाठी केली होती, हे आता स्पष्ट होत आहे. तसे गूगलकडून सांगण्यात आले आहे. बंद करण्यात येणाऱ्या देशात आपली ऑनलाइन ओळख निर्माण करणे सोपे झाले असून इंटरनेटही स्वस्त झाले आहे. त्यामुळे आता गूगल स्टेशन सेवेची आवश्यकता उरली नसल्याचे कारण गूगलने दिले आहे. 

भारतात गूगलकडून ४०० स्थानके २०२०च्या मध्यापर्यंत जोडण्याचे ध्येय बाळगण्यात आले होते. हे ध्येय २०१८मध्येच पार केल्याचे गूगलचे विभागीय उपाध्यक्ष सीझर सेनगुप्ता यांनी म्हटले आहे. सध्या देशातील अनेक स्थानकांतून ही सेवा सुरू आहे. अन्य ठिकाणीही ही सेवा दूरसंचार कंपन्या, आयएसपी आणि स्थानिक प्रशासकीय संस्था यांच्या सहकार्याने सुरू आहे.

आपल्या सेवेत बदल आणि सुधारणा करण्याची गरज आहे. तसेच काही देशांमध्ये या प्रोजेक्टसाठी तांत्रिक समस्यांचा सामना करावा लागतोय, यामुळे हा प्रोजक्ट बंद करण्यात येत आहे, असे गूगलकडून कारण पुढे करण्यात आले आहे. २०१५मध्ये गूगलने भारतीय रेल्वे आणि रेलटेल यांच्यासमवेत मोफत सार्वजनिक वायफाय सेवा देणारी ‘स्टेशन’ ही सेवा सुरू केली होती.  

दरम्यान, गूगलने आपली सेवा बंद केली तरी भविष्यात देशात रेल्वे स्थानकांवरील ही मोफत वाय-फायची सेवा सुरुच राहण्याची शक्यता आहे. ही सेवा आता RailTel कडून मिळण्याची शक्यता आहे. आणि देशभरातील ५,६०० पेक्षा जास्त रेल्वे स्थानकांवर ही मोफत WiFi ची सेवा मिळण्याचे संकेत आहेत.
